Laser Treatment for
Actinic Keratoses
Actinic keratoses are rough, scaly patches that develop on sun‑exposed skin over time. At Iona Dermatologics, we use the Lutronic Ultra™ laser as part of a medical approach to help improve the appearance and texture of sun‑damaged areas. This non‑ablative fractional laser delivers controlled energy into the upper layers of the skin, promoting smoother texture and a more even tone while preserving surrounding tissue. Every treatment plan is designed by our physician‑led team after a careful skin assessment, with a focus on safety, comfort, and clear communication about your options.
The Science of the Laser
Fractional Resurfacing of Rough Areas
Our medical-grade laser system accurately delivers thousands of microscopic laser columns into the top layers of the skin. These microbeams selectively treat rough, sun‑damaged areas while leaving surrounding skin intact. This fractional approach helps support renewal of the surface while allowing for relatively quick recovery.
Stimulating Renewal and Smoother Texture
By gently heating the upper dermis, Lutronic Ultra™ stimulates controlled skin renewal and supports new collagen formation. Over time, treated areas can feel smoother and appear more even, helping to reduce the roughness and visible impact of sun damage in selected cases.
Clinical Efficacy
Because actinic keratoses are considered precancerous lesions, they always require proper medical evaluation. At Iona Dermatologics, every patient is assessed by our physician‑led team. Lutronic Ultra™ may be one tool in a broader treatment plan that can include other therapies. If laser is appropriate for you, we adjust the settings and schedule to your specific skin type, history of sun exposure, and medical needs.
Treatment Process
01
Dermatological Consultation
Your visit begins with a detailed medical assessment of your skin. We examine the number, size, and pattern of actinic keratoses, review your health history and medications, and discuss your history of sun exposure. In some cases, a biopsy or alternate treatment may be recommended before any laser is considered.
02
Preparation & Comfort
If Lutronic Ultra™ is appropriate, we design a tailored plan that may combine laser with other medical therapies. We explain the role of laser in your care, the number of sessions recommended, and how this integrates with your overall skin‑health strategy, including sun protection and follow‑up exams.
03
Advanced Laser Rejuvenation
On the day of treatment, your skin is gently cleansed and protective eyewear is applied. The Lutronic Ultra™ handpiece is passed over the areas of sun‑damaged skin being targeted. Sessions typically take 20–40 minutes, depending on the areas involved. You may feel warmth or a prickling sensation, which our team closely monitors and adjusts for your comfort.
04
Clinical Aftercare
After treatment, treated areas may appear pink or slightly darker and feel rough, similar to a sunburn or dry patch. This usually settles as the skin renews over the following days to weeks. We provide clear aftercare instructions, emphasize strict sun protection, and schedule follow‑up visits. Because actinic keratoses are precancerous, ongoing skin checks remain important even after visible improvement.
What to Expect at Your Visit
Before the Session
Please arrive with clean skin, free of makeup, self‑tanner, and active skincare such as retinoids or strong acids. Let us know about any previous skin cancers, biopsies, or treatments for actinic keratoses. We will review your medications and recent sun exposure to time your treatment as safely as possible.
During the Session
You will feel brief pulses of warmth as the laser passes over sun‑damaged areas. Most patients find the procedure manageable and are able to resume most regular activities soon after. Our team stays with you throughout the session to monitor your comfort and answer any questions.
Post-Treatment Care
Redness, swelling, and a sandpaper‑like feel are common for several days after treatment. Some areas may flake or temporarily darken before they shed. It is important to avoid picking or scratching and to follow our aftercare instructions closely. Sun protection is essential; we will recommend suitable sunscreens and supportive skincare to help protect your results and your long‑term skin health.
